He gets out of bed, and looks down at his Army boots, parked next to a chair. Al opens the window blinds and squints at the sunshine. He picks up the Army boots, and tosses them out the window, listening to them hit the pavement four floors below.
That task completed, Al looks at himself in the bedroom mirror, then looks at a prewar portrait sitting in a picture frame next to the mirror.
