“Well, we were afraid it might worry you – – you, being so far away and everything,” says Hortense. “And it was kind of inconvenient for Marie, living in this place, after she took that job.”<\/p>\n
“But, we forwarded all your letters, and the allotment checks,” adds Pat.<\/p>\n
“She took a job?” asks Fred. “Where?”<\/p>\n
“Uh, some nightclub,” says Pat. “I don’t know just which one.”<\/p>\n
“Oh, the poor girl works ’til all hours,” says Hortense.<\/p>\n
“Where does she live?” asks Fred.<\/p>\n
“Uh, Grandview Arms,” says Pat. “It’s on Pine Street.<\/p>\n
“But there’s nothing to worry about, Freddy,” says Hortense. “Marie’s fine! We saw her last – – last Christmas. She brought us some beautiful presents.”<\/p>\n
“Marie’s a good-hearted girl,” says Pat.<\/p>\n
“Do you know what time she goes out to work?” asks Fred.<\/p>\n
“Um– along about suppertime, I imagine,” says Pat.<\/p>\n
Fred looks around. “Do you mind if I leave my stuff here?” asks Fred. “I’ll pick it up later.”<\/p>\n
“Sure,” says Hortense, “but – aren’t you going to stay and have a bite to eat?”<\/p>\n
